Uses and Benefits
The flavor of star anise is generally thought of as sweet but it is commonly used in savory dishes. It pairs well with citrus, onions, poultry, beef, cinnamon, nutmeg & ginger.
It can be used in sauces marinades & soups and removed before serving. In Indian cuisine it is often used to flavor slow cooked dishes such as stews, curries, pulao & biryani. It is also used in desserts to impart a mild sweetness & spicy flavor.
Star Anise is an anti-oxidant & has anti-bacterial properties. It helps keep colds & coughs at bay.
It must be stored in air-tight container in a cool, dark place. If properly stored, it can last for several months.
